Palyno-Stratigraphy and Kerogen Assessment of OMA Well Sediments, Offshore Dahomey Basin, Southwestern Nigeria

Biostratigraphy has remained a tool for basin and environmental reconstruction in sedimentology. This study aims to further delineate classify the lithology, environment of deposition, biozonation microorganisms found studied well. Thirty-four (34) ditch cutting samples from OMA well, offshore Dahomey Basin, were considered their textural palynomorphs/palynofacies characterization. The observed processed according standard palynological procedure geologic using hydrochloric hydrofluoric acid digestion. stratigraphic sequence well ranges shale sandstone argillaceous sandstone. shales appear highly fissile laminated all shades grey black while colour light-grey/brown brown very deep brown. contains some mica flakes likely pyrites fine-medium, sub-angular rounded grains. A total 28 diverse palynomorphs reported analysis with low abundance. recovery pollens was due limited terrestrial influence reasonable amount dinoflagellate cysts microforaminifera wall present indicated marginal marine distal environment. Two zones correlated this are Danea mutabilis (Early Paleocene) Dinogymnium euclaense (Upper Maastrichtian) zones. Palynomaceral classifications through visual, microscopic kerogen assessment resulted high preservation organic matter which suggests reducing deposition. dominances 48% amorphous (I), 36% exinite (II), considerable 5% vitrinite (III), 11% inertinite (IV) types, indicate that is mainly sapropelic mixed humic-sapropelic types favorable hydrocarbon generation primarily origin. spores/pollen light yellow/brown, transitioning into darker on scale 4/5 5/6. Medium degree maturation (4/5) late (6/7) inferred. interval sediments agrees established offshore, basin, within Upper Maastrichtian Late Paleocene age range supports sufficient mature enough generate hydrocarbon.
